watering

English lavender requires weekly watering throughout the growing season. During the active growth season, from late spring to early fall, it is best to water the plant deeply and thoroughly so that water reaches 8-10 inches into the soil. Keep the soil slightly moist and avoid over-watering which can lead to root rot. During dry summer months, English lavender can benefit from more frequent, lighter waterings to keep the soil moist but still well-drained. During the winter months, reduce your watering frequency to only when the soil feels dry at least 1 inch into the soil.

sunlight

English lavender should be placed in direct sunlight for 6 to 8 hours per day. It is best to provide morning sun and afternoon shade as too much afternoon sun can cause damage to the plant. Lavender should be grown in well-drained, slightly sandy soil that has a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It also tolerates poor soil, but will not flower as profusely as when grown in more favorable conditions. The soil should be kept moist during the growing season, but not too wet as this can cause the roots to rot.

pruning

English lavender should be pruned twice a year. In the spring, cut all dead branches and any flower stalks that didn't bloom back to within 3 inches of the base of the plant. This will encourage healthy new growth. In the fall, after the flowers have faded, remove 1 third to 1-half of the length of the branches to promote good shape and density. Be sure to cut in a straight line just above a pair of leaves, as this will help encourage bushy growth.
