Lilium 'Connecticut King'

Asiatic Lily, also known as Lilium 'Connecticut King', is a spectacular and attractive type of lily that has large, remarkable blooms spanning 20cm wide. Reaching up to 3m tall, it has deep green, sword-shaped foliage which creates a lovely backdrop to its brilliant golden-orange blossoms. These blooms, that arise from early summer to early autumn, have the most exotic fragrance which drifts on the garden air. A favourite of most gardeners, this royal lily doesn’t like soggy soil or intense heat but doesn't require much in the way of maintenance.

watering

Water your Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Connecticut King') lightly and consistently. In warm weather, water the plant approximately once a week, making sure to moisten the soil to a depth of at least 1 inch. In cooler weather, water every 10 to 14 days. The soil should be kept slightly moist, but not soggy. In the summer, water more frequently if the weather is hot and dry. You can check the soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If the soil feels damp, then it is sufficiently moist.

sunlight

The Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Connecticut King') requires between 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. To ensure optimal blooming for this plant species, it should be placed in a bright location that does not receive heavy shade during any part of the day. It should be noted that too much direct sunlight, such as that provided by a full day of intense sunlight, can cause too much heat, resulting in wilting and burn leaves, which can negatively affect the bloom.

pruning

Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Connecticut King') should be pruned twice a year, in late summer/fall and early spring. In late summer/fall, remove the lower leaves and spent flower stems, leaving the foliage 2-3 inches above the ground. In early spring, remove all dead foliage and any remaining flower stalks. During both pruning times, cut the stems back to about 6 inches for more vigorous growth. This species of lily does not need to be heavily pruned, and should be handled gently for best results.
