Potentilla 'Flamenco'

Cinquefoil (Potentilla 'Flamenco') is a popular flowering perennial that blooms in late spring with deep red clusters of five-petaled flowers. It has long-lasting blossoms from summer until fall and it features bright green maple-like foliage. Its compact and upright habit is well-suited for flower beds, borders, and containers, and demands virtually no regular maintenance. Though its height only reaches about 25 cm, its resilience and vibrant colors make it an excellent choice for first-time gardeners. Cinquefoil (Potentilla 'Flamenco') is also deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, and happily grows in full sun or partial shade.

watering

Cinquefoil (Potentilla 'Flamenco') should be watered regularly. During the growing season, it should be watered deeply once per week. During hot weather, it may need watering more frequently, but it should be checked first for moisture to avoid over-watering. In the winter months, water the plant only when the soil begins to feel dry.

sunlight

Cinquefoil (Potentilla 'Flamenco') needs plenty of sunlight to thrive. This plant performs best in full sun to light shade, meaning 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day. Aim for at least 4 hours of sunlight for best performance. It will do well in partial shade in warmer climates, but will need more sun in cooler climates. Avoid deep shade as this will inhibit flowering and reduce overall growth. During the hottest months of the summer, partial shade in the afternoon can help reduce heat stress. During colder months, more sunlight is needed to ensure proper growth and flowering.

pruning

Cinquefoil (Potentilla 'Flamenco') should be pruned lightly in mid to late spring to keep its shape and encourage new growth. The stems should be cut back to just above the new buds, just after the last frost of spring. Pruning too late in the season can cause new growth to be stunted or to produce fewer blooms or even die. If your Cinquefoil becomes too bushy and leggy, then it can be cut down to about 2-3 inches from the ground in early spring. This will also encourage new growth.
