Primula denticulata 'Ronsdorf'

Drumstick primula (Primula denticulata 'Ronsdorf') is an eye-catching perennial with small, bell-shaped blooms. This exotic perennial is native to the mountains of China, and its light pink flowers bloom from June to August. Its deep green foliage is its main attraction, which forms a fan-shaped clump up to 50cm tall. The bright pink and yellow buds of this primula open up to beautiful bell-shaped flowers, which stand out above the foliage. Perfect for any shade garden, drumstick primula is great for containers and rock gardens. It is easy to care for and attracts bees and butterflies to gardens.

watering

Drumstick primula should be watered regularly and evenly, particularly during the active growing season (the spring and summer months). Generally, they need to be watered once or twice a week, although plants that are in direct sun and/or in full bloom will likely need to be watered more often than plants that are in shade and/or not actively growing. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot. To ensure you do not overwater your plant, wait until the top inch or 2 of soil is dry before watering. Additionally, try to water in the morning or evening to allow the plant to absorb the water before the heat of the day, reducing the chances of water evaporation.

sunlight

Drumstick Primula should be placed in bright to full sunlight for at least 4 hours a day, preferably in the cooler hours of the morning or late afternoon. This will help to maintain a steady flowering period from mid spring to the end of summer. While direct sunlight is beneficial, the plant can also benefit from shadier spots with indirect and filtered light too. Care should be taken to not expose the Drumstick Primula to too much intense sun directly as this may cause the petals of the plant to discolour and the foliage to burn.

pruning

The drumstick primula, or Primula denticulata 'Ronsdorf', is best pruned in the early spring, or late winter if the temperature rise above 32°F. Pruning at this time of year will help promote healthy growth in new foliage. The majority of pruning should be done with sharp garden shears or pruning clippers. Cut any dead leaves back to the soil's surface level. It is also important to remove any broken branches or stems to prevent disease and rot. You can also lightly trim the plant to control size and shape. In general, you should aim to prune between 15 to 20 percent of the plant's foliage each year. This helps keep the primula plant healthy.
