Species white stonecrop

white stonecrop

Sedum album

White stonecrop is a drought-tolerant perennial succulent native to Eurasia. It boasts attractive, fleshy, triangular, white-greenish leaves that form an evergreen carpet-like mound to a maximum height of 8 inches. The plant produces star-shaped white blooms in late spring to early summer, which are attractive to butterflies. It prefers full sun exposure and well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline, rocky soils, making it an ideal choice for rock gardens and alpine troughs. It is an easy-care, low-maintenance plant that thrives in dry conditions and makes a great addition to any garden.

watering

White stonecrop requires a moderate amount of water, especially during periods of warmer weather. Water when the top inch or so of soil has dried out. Soak the soil (until water is draining from the bottom of the pot) about once a week during the summer. Reduce watering to every 2 weeks during the fall/winter. During periods of extreme heat, water more frequently, as the soil will dry out faster.

sunlight

White stonecrop grows best in full sunlight, ideally at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day. This species is tolerant of drought, and does not need more than occasional watering during dry spells. White stonecrop requires little care, as it is quite hardy and will colonize on its own. Keep in mind that while this species is tolerant of drought, it can easily dry out when exposed to too much sunlight and heat. Many people find that a few hours of afternoon shade can help mitigate any potential dryness and also help the succulent thrive.

pruning

White stonecrop (Sedum album) should be pruned in late winter or early spring, when the plant begins to grow. Prune off the dead or damaged stems, removing any stem that is brown or yellow. For young plants, you can trim off about half of the stems if you want, but it isn’t necessary. For mature plants, prune to the desired shape and size, up to about 1-third of the plant. If you do prune off more than 1-third, leave some of the pruned stems near the base of the plant to ensure the white stonecrop continues to flower well.
