Sedum telephium 'Dark Magic'

Stonecrop, or Sedum telephium 'Dark Magic', is a hardy deciduous perennial plant with striking, chocolate-purple foliage and star-shaped pink flowers. It is primarily known as an excellent groundcover plant, but also provides spectacular color for any garden or container whether grown in sun or partial shade. The fleshy evergreen foliage of this low-maintenance plant gives it high drought tolerance as well as deer and rabbit resistance. It works great in rock gardens, between stepping stones, and can even be used to soften the lines between two different pieces of hardscape. Stonecrop blooms throughout the summer months and its flowers attract wildlife such as butterflies and bees.

watering

Stonecrop (Sedum telephium 'Dark Magic') should be watered once a week to keep the soil lightly moist, but not soggy. Water in the early morning or late afternoon to reduce evaporation. Watering your stonecrop at the base of the plant near the soil line and use lukewarm water. Avoid wetting the foliage when watering. During the summer months, if the weather is hot and dry, water your stonecrop every 5-7 days. In particularly hot and dry conditions, give your stonecrop a good soaking every other week, to ensure the roots are getting hydrated.

sunlight

Stonecrop (Sedum telephium 'Dark Magic') requires full sun for 6 to 8 hours per day, typically during the peak sunny hours of the day. This can change depending on the season, as the sun is stronger and higher in the sky during the summer and weaker and lower in the sky during the winter. To keep this plant healthy, it's important to ensure it receives the amount of natural sunlight it needs, and this can be done in part by positioning the plant in an area that gets adequate sun exposure.

pruning

Stonecrop's (Sedum telephium 'Dark Magic') should be pruned lightly at least once a year. For best results, prune in early spring before new growth occurs. This will help the plant to stay full and bushy. Remove any dead or damaged stems during pruning to encourage healthy growth. Prune back large branches and stems by up to a third of their size, and any weaker stems by up to half. Pruning back more severely, while not recommended for this species, will help to reduce the plant's size and help to shape it.
