Sidalcea 'Party Girl'

Prairie mallow or Sidalcea 'Party Girl' is a popular ornamental garden flower with unique frilly pinkish-lilac blooms borne atop a tall inflorescence. It adds vibrant colour and texture to any garden bed, and its glossy, serrated foliage will remain evergreen well into the autumn. It will thrive in full sun locations and will be extremely drought tolerant once established. Though short-lived, it will reliably reseed itself throughout the growing season and persists due to its hardiness and extreme drought tolerance. Planting it in garden beds, perennial borders or meadows will bring a beautiful addition to your outdoor spaces.

watering

Prairie mallow (Sidalcea 'Party Girl') should be watered whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. This usually occurs every 4-7 days in the summer, and 1-2 times a week in winter. When watering your plant, water thoroughly until the soil is thoroughly saturated. Allow the excess water to drain away. To avoid waterlogging, never water the plant 1 day, and again the next or 2 days in a row. Over-watering your plant can lead to root rot so be sure to not water too much!

sunlight

Prairie mallow (Sidalcea 'Party Girl') will benefit from full sun during the morning and early afternoon hours. In areas with moderate climates 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight per day is optimal, while plants located in hotter climates should be partially shaded during the mid-day and afternoon when the albedo is at its highest. If other shade sources, such as tall trees, bushes, and buildings, are not available, then a sunshade, such as a light cloth, should be placed over the plant during peak hours.

pruning

Prairie mallow (Sidalcea 'Party Girl') should be pruned once annually, preferably soon after blooming in the summer. Prune the plant by removing spent blooms and cutting back the stems by 1/3 of their length. Removing excessive foliage and vigorous stems will encourage new growth and prolong flowering. To stimulate healthy, bushy growth, cut back the stems with a pair of pruning shears or a lawnmower to about 6 inches above the ground. This will help promote strong lateral growth and flowering.
