watering

Toad lilies (Tricyrtis 'Tojen') require moist soil with good drainage for optimal growth. Water the plant deeply once per week in the morning when the soil is dry to the touch. During periods of excessive heat or drought, water the plants 2 to 3 times per week. Avoid overwatering toad lilies, as soggy soil can lead to fungal problems. If the leaves start to turn yellow, decrease watering until the plant recovers. In winter, when the plant is dormant, reduce watering drastically.

sunlight

Toad lilies (Tricyrtis 'Tojen') require partial to full shade and prefer a few hours of direct sunlight per day. Light levels can range from partial shade with 2-4 hours of direct sunlight to full shade, with no direct sunlight. For optimal growth, Toad lilies should receive between 2 and 4 hours of sunlight per day, as more than 4 hours can cause the leaves to burn or fade. When the temperatures are extreme, such as mid-day during the summer, the plants should be shaded from the direct sunlight. In cool climates, some morning sun is beneficial and will help ensure their flowers open fully.

pruning

Toad lily, or Tricyrtis 'Tojen', should be pruned in early spring or late winter before new growth begins. Pruning should be minimal; about a third of the foliage should be removed in order to promote air circulation and allow light into the center of the plant. Deadheading the faded flowers is also recommended to encourage new blooms. In addition, spent flower stalks and any diseased or damaged stems should be removed.
