Species Adam's needle

Adam's needle

Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard'

Adam's needle is a flowering evergreen plant with leathery, pointed leaves that can grow up to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The leaves are yellow-green, sometimes variegated with cream and gold. The Color Guard variety has dramatic yellow margins around each leaf. Its longtime bloom period of June-July brings fragrant white flowers that share the air with an intensely sweet smell. Adam's needle is proud to be drought-tolerant and has beautiful bloom clusters to show off for years. It is a perfect addition to a variety of landscapes due to its cold-hardiness, bright color and long flowering season.

watering

Adam's needle (Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard') is a low-maintenance plant that doesn't require a lot of water. It should only be watered when the soil has had a chance to dry out. During the spring and summer months, water Adam's needle once every week or 2. During the cooler months of fall and winter, water only when the top layer of soil is dry. Avoid over-watering this plant as it can lead to root rot. If you are unsure if the plant needs water, use your finger to test the moisture of the soil. If it is dry to the touch, the plant needs to be watered.

sunlight

Adam's Needle (Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard') thrives in full sunlight, so 4-6 hours of direct sunlight a day is ideal. This can occur during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the sun is typically at its highest point in the sky. During the summer, it can benefit from more direct sunlight, up to 8 hours a day if possible; and in the winter, when the days are shorter, it can do with just a few hours of sun per day. If your climate allows, you should position Adam's Needle in the sunniest spot you can find, as its deep green and gold leaves need direct sunlight to remain vibrant.

pruning

Adam's Needle (Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard') should be pruned in early spring before new growth emerges. Pruning should only be done when absolutely necessary as it can damage the plant. Prune off any dead or damaged leaves and any suckers (new shoots that develop from the base of the plant). Prune back the foliage up to 1/3 to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new growth. Avoid pruning any flowering stalks.
