Zantedeschia aethiopica

The calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) is an evergreen perennial plant native to Southern Africa. It has glossy, arrowhead-shaped leaves and a long stem topped with a distinctive trumpet-shaped flower. The calla lily blooms in shades of white, yellow, pink, and peach. It's the perfect addition to any garden or bouquet. This hardy plant can thrive in sunny or partially-shaded conditions and prefer moist, well-drained soil. Calla lilies are low-maintenance and can drought tolerant, but regular watering is still important for blooms. Plant them outdoors in spring and enjoy the vibrant pops of color all summer long!

watering

Water your Calla Lily plant once every 7 days, and water deeply until the soil is saturated. Make sure to water directly into the soil so the roots can take up the moisture, instead of wetting the foliage, as this may cause damage to the leaves. The soil should be moist but not overly soggy, so drainage is essential. Water should freely trickle out of the bottom of the container when the soil is sufficiently moist. Reduce watering briefly during the winter months when the plant is in its dormant period. As a general rule of thumb, allow the top inch of the soil to dry out before watering.

sunlight

The calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) grows best in full sun to partial shade, with no more than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The best place to plant it is in a bright area with plenty of indirect sunlight. During the spring and summer, the lily can handle more intense light for a few hours, but during the autumn and winter it is best to provide some partial shade to protect the lily from the harsher, cooler temperatures. Additionally, regular watering is necessary to keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season so the lily can reach its full potential.

pruning

Calla lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) should be lightly pruned in mid- to late spring after blooming and before the new growth appears. Prune the flower stems down to 3”-5” above the soil surface, and, if possible, eliminate any dead or damaged foliage. This annual pruning will help ensure optimal health and blooming, and promotes new foliage growth. In addition, in late summer you should prune away any yellowed foliage, as well as any dead flower stems, allowing for the new foliage to grow. Pruning away the foliage will also help keep the plant healthy during the winter months. After pruning, remember to water and fertilize the plants to boost their new growth.
