watering
Japanese zelkova should be watered thoroughly, allowing the soil to become completely saturated but not soggy. Generally, water the plant once a week in the spring and summer, then reduce watering to once every 2 weeks in the fall and winter. Make sure to check the soil moisture regularly as plants in containers dry out quicker than those in the ground. If the top couple of inches of soil feel dry to the touch, it is time to water. On especially hot days when temperatures rise above 86°F (30°C), the plant may require additional water.
sunlight
Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase') prefers full sunlight or partial shade. It can tolerate 6 hours of dappled sunlight and partial shade each day but will thrive best with 8 hours of direct sunlight. Although it can tolerate shade, it will grow more slowly and may not reach its normal height. During the hottest part of the day, it is best to provide some protection from the sun or a dappled shade.
pruning
Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase') should be pruned twice per year, once in late winter (February or March) and again in mid-summer (July or August). Pruning in late winter is done to eliminate any crossing or rubbing branches as well as any dead or damaged wood. This helps to maintain an attractive shape and invigorate the foliage. Pruning in mid-summer promotes new growth and encourages a bushy habit. The overall amount of pruning should be kept light and only the necessary areas should be trimmed to maintain the plant's desired shape. It helps to stand back from the tree after pruning and assess the shape before digging in further.
