Species zoysia grass

zoysia grass

Zoysia japonica 'Compadre'

Zoysia grass (Zoysia japonica 'Compadre') is a versatile, low-maintenance turf grass for both sun and shade. It produces a thick, soft, dark carpet-like texture that will give any green space a luxurious look. Its dense, tight growth habit allows it to fill in tough bare spots and tolerate a high level of traffic. Its deep roots help it store water and withstand heat, drought, and cold temperatures with ease. Its winter green foliage is an appearance bonus during the colder months of the year. This resilient turf grass is a true standout in any landscape.

watering

Zoysia grass should be watered deeply and infrequently. For best results, water when the top inch of soil is dry. Depending on soil type, the frequency of watering may range from once a week to once every 2 weeks. During periods of drought or intense summer heat, water frequency may need to increase to once a week. For established lawns, applying 1 inch of water per week is adequate. However, lighter soils may require more applications for the same amount of water. During periods of active growth, such as spring, more frequent and deeper watering may be necessary to promote healthy growth.

sunlight

Zoysia grass (Zoysia japonica 'Compadre') thrives in full sun, which means it needs at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In areas where there are very hot summers, some shade in the afternoon may be beneficial. Zoysia grass also tolerates partial shade, but it requires more water and fertilizer to remain healthy in these conditions. In general, morning sunlight is preferred with less direct sun in the afternoon.

pruning

Zoysia grass (Zoysia japonica 'Compadre') should be pruned twice a year, once in the late spring and once more in the late summer. In the spring, prune the grass down to about 2 inches to remove all of the dead grass, as well as any straw-like leftovers from the previous year. This pruning will also help promote growth and thicker foliage. In the late summer, prune the grass down again to about 2 or 3 inches in order to keep the grass low and promote healthy growth. If needed, make a few targeted spot prunings for aesthetic reasons as well.
