watering

Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium dubium 'Little Joe') should be watered regularly and deeply, especially during its first season of growth. During dry periods in the spring and summer, it should be watered 1-2 times a week, providing 1-2 inches of water per session. In the fall and winter, watering should be reduced to once every 2-3 weeks with a smaller amount of water, approximately 1 inch per session. As with all plants, water the root zone only and keep foliage dry to avoid fungal diseases.

sunlight

Joe Pye weed should be grown in full sun. For optimal growth, this species should receive at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In cooler regions, this species can tolerate light morning sun and afternoon shade.

pruning

Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium dubium ‘Little Joe’) should be pruned back to the ground in early spring, right before growth begins. This will encourage bushier plants with more blooms. Cut the stems just above the emerging leaves, taking care not to damage the buds. Remove any dead or dying stems and shorten the remaining ones to just above leaf nodes. If you want a shorter plant, it is ok to shorten stems even further. If you are growing the plant for its foliage, you can also do light pruning in the summer.
