watering

For optimal growth, Self Heal (Prunella grandiflora 'Rosea') plants should be watered deeply and regularly. During the spring and summer, Self Heal should be watered about once a week. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings and make sure not to overwater. In the fall and winter, reduce the frequency of watering. Self Heal plants can go without water as long as a few weeks, and can even be drought tolerant. However, Self Heal plants will benefit from occasional watering, so check the soil periodically to make sure the soil remains moist but not soggy.

sunlight

Self Heal (Prunella grandiflora 'Rosea') grows best in full sun, with at least 6 to 7 hours of direct sunlight each day. In cooler climates, the plant can tolerate afternoon shade, but may not flower as profusely. In more arid climates, afternoon shade is recommended.

pruning

Self heal is a perennial that should be pruned in early to mid spring. Remove any stems that appear dead, dying, or damaged as soon as you spot them, so that the plant can focus its energy on new, healthy growth. As the plant blooms, snip off faded flowers to encourage the plant to keep producing blooms, then deadhead the entire plant a few weeks after its first flush of flowers. This will help keep the plant looking its best, and thin the clump to prevent overcrowding. As the plant ages, it may become woody, so if necessary, prune out a few of the oldest stems at the base of the plant to encourage new, fresh growth.
