watering

Ice plant (Delosperma cooperi) should be watered once a week. Water thoroughly, until it starts to run out of the pot's drainage holes. Make sure you water only when the soil's surface is dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot. During the hot summer months, you may need to water more often, as the soil dries out more quickly. In cooler months, water only when the soil is dry an inch or so below the surface. Adding mulch around the base of your ice plant will help retain moisture.

sunlight

The sunlight requirements of the ice plant (Delosperma cooperi) are considered to be moderate. The plant grows best in full sun for at least 6 hours a day, with some afternoon shade in areas with intense summer sunshine. In cooler climates, the plant may need a bit more sunlight to thrive. In areas with high temperatures, the ice plant will do best in partial shade or morning sun with a few hours of afternoon shade. In colder winter climates, the ice plant will need protection from winter winds to avoid damage.

pruning

Ice Plant (Delosperma cooperi) should be pruned once every year or 2 in spring or early summer, once established. Prune the plant to maintain a desired size or shape, or to make the plant fuller and bushier. When pruning, remove all dead or damaged stems and thin out overcrowded growth. Remove no more than 1-third of the plant. Cut the stems back to the base of the plant if needed to reduce size. If the plant is particularly tall and leggy, cut the stems back to 6-9 inches tall. Pruning not only encourages healthier growth but also creates a fuller, bushier plant.
