watering

Intermediate wood fern should be watered an average of 2-3 times per week. The amount of water each time should be enough to moisten the soil, but not enough to make it soggy. As a general rule, about 1 cup of water for every square foot of soil is adequate. Depending upon the weather, the fern may require more or less frequent watering. During warm summers, the soil should be kept moist but not soaked, and during cool weather, water may only need to be supplied every 8-10 days.

sunlight

Intermediate wood fern prefers partial to full shade and prefers moist soil. It should receive bright indirect or filtered light for at least 4 hours a day. Direct sunlight should be avoided as this can lead to sunburn and leaf scorch. During the spring and summer, intermediate wood fern needs more sunlight than during the fall and winter months. If placed in a bright location, its fronds will be green and lush, and if placed in shadier locations, its foliage will have a more gray-green cast. Watering needs vary depending on temperature and the amount of shade and sunlight the plant receives. In the summer, Intermediate wood fern should receive regular watering but should be allowed to dry out slightly between each watering. During the winter, water requirements are reduced and the plant should be checked periodically for moisture.

pruning

Intermediate wood ferns can be pruned at any time of the year. However, it is best to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Pruning should be done with sharp, clean shears as this will help discourage the spread of any disease or pest problems. Be sure to prune off the dead and diseased fronds first before cutting healthy fronds. When pruning, only prune away as much as is necessary to maintain the plant’s shape and size. If you are trying to grow a larger specimen, then prune less. In general, wood ferns respond well to a light annual prune of 10% - 15% of the fronds. This will keep the plant vigorous and healthy.
