watering
Hosta 'Decorata' requires moist but well-drained soil. Water them about 1 inch per week during the active growing season (early spring to late summer). In hotter climates, water more often to keep the soil from drying out. During winter, water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. To ensure that their soil has proper drainage, avoid overwatering; too much water can cause root rot. As with all hostas, be sure to provide adequate air circulation around the base and roots of the plant to help prevent disease.
sunlight
The Hosta 'Decorata' plants need about 4-6 hours of direct sunlight a day, usually early morning sun is best. It can usually tolerate some afternoon sun as long as it is not too strong and hot. If the plant is kept in an area with sun for too long, the leaves can turn yellow and become burned or permanently damaged. Additionally, these plants prefer indirect sunlight the rest of the day. Hosta 'Decorata' plants should not be shaded for more than 70%-80% of the day when kept outdoors. When kept indoors, it is important to provide an adequate source of artificial lighting for the plant, such as from a west or south facing window.
pruning
Hosta 'Decorata' does not require a lot of pruning. To keep it healthy and looking its best, it should be lightly pruned once a year in the late spring or early summer when new growth is beginning to appear. To begin, remove any dead, damaged, or diseased leaves or stems with a pair of clean pruning shears. If the plant has become overgrown, you can lightly trim any areas that need thinning. Keep in mind that pruning should be done sparingly in order to preserve the natural shape of the plant. Too much pruning can result in an unnatural shape that will compromise the health and growth of the plant. If you want to propagate Hosta 'Decorata', you can do it when it is dormant in the wintertime. Cut the rhizome into sections and place them in moist potting soil.
