watering

Stokes’ aster should be watered twice a week when in full growth. Aim for deep and thorough waterings, as this plant prefers its soil to be consistently moist. During the summer months, however, the plant may require more frequent watering as temperatures rise. It is important to make sure the soil drains well and does not become soggy, as this can lead to root rot. Once established, Stokes' aster should be watered until the top few inches of soil are moist, but not completely soaked. Established plants in containers may require more frequent watering to keep up with evaporative losses.

sunlight

Stokes' aster (Stokesia laevis 'Peachie's Pick') should be planted in full sun or partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. While Stokes' aster can tolerate full sun, part shade is optimal for bloom production. In shadier areas, the plant will bloom, but they won't be as vibrant or plentiful. For optimal blooming, morning sun and some afternoon shade is recommended. With adequate sunlight, these plants will usually come into bloom in late spring and continue blooming through the early fall.

pruning

Stokes' Aster should be pruned in late winter or early spring while still dormant. Prune away any damaged, diseased, or dead branches. Use a pruning shear or pruning saw, depending on how thick the branches are, to cut the plant back quite heavily. Cut the stems back to about 3-4 inches high. Some of the plants may not bloom as heavily in the first season after pruning, but will gradually come back fuller and wider in the following seasons. Remember to always prune away any branches that are growing in the wrong direction. Pruned plants should be watered routinely and thoroughly. After pruning, check the plant for any pests and diseases and treat as necessary.
