watering

Cheddar Pink (Dianthus 'Bath's Pink') plants should be watered deeply and evenly when soil is dry to the touch- about once a week is sufficient. Watering too frequently can cause root rot, however, so make sure to allow the soil and the plant to dry out in between waterings. During warmer weather, you may need to water the plant twice a week instead of once. It is best to water Cheddar Pink plants in the morning in order for their foliage to stay dry during the day. Avoid getting the foliage wet as this can lead to disease as well. If you notice any signs of overwatering, reduce frequency and/or quantity of water to prevent root decay.

sunlight

Cheddar Pink (Dianthus 'Bath's Pink') prefers full sun for 6-8 hours a day, especially when grown in cooler climates. However, they can also tolerate some partial shade, as long as they are still getting at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight each day. They need as much sun as possible, especially during the hottest part of the day when temperatures are at their highest. When grown in full sun, these plants can enjoy more intense colors, improved flowering, and a strong, healthy growth. In regions with intense heat, it’s best to provide some midday shade to prevent scorching or wilting of the foliage.

pruning

Cheddar pink (Dianthus 'Bath's Pink') can be pruned late winter or early spring before any new growth begins. Cut the stems back to about 5 cm above ground level, being careful to avoid cutting any of the new growth. Deadhead any spent flowers in autumn up until about mid-December. If the stems become overgrown and untidy, give them a light trim in early summer while some of the new growth is still fresh, then again in late summer. Remove any faded or dead flower heads to ensure bloom in the following year.
