Fortunearia sinensis, also known as Fortune’s Myrtle, benefits from bright and sunny conditions. This plant species needs a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight each day to grow properly. In areas with harsher climates, the plant should be placed in a partially shaded area, as too much strong, direct sunlight can result in sunburn. Additionally, while it typically requires more sun in the spring and summer, it should be exposed to some shade in the late afternoon during hotter months to help protect it from sunburn.

Pruning Fortunearia sinensis should be done regularly to keep it healthy and encourage increased blooming. The best time to prune Fortunearia sinensis is in late winter/early spring. This is when the plant is dormant and it is the safest time to prune. Generally, pruning should not exceed 15% of the total live growth at a time. When pruning, being sure to remove all dead material and shape the plant by selectively removing branches, adjusting height, and other structuring. It is also important to be sure to thin out dense areas to allow for air circulation and light penetration. When finished, be sure to clean up around the plant as to not leave any diseased or dead material behind.
