white garland-lily

Hedychium coronarium

White garland-lily (Hedychium coronarium) is a large and tender perennial from the Zingiberaceae family. Native to the Himalayas, it grows up to 16 feet tall in an upright fashion and sports clusters of fragrant white blossoms with yellow-tipped petals. In tropical climates, these blooms appear throughout the summer months. The large, oblong-shaped green leaves are slightly edged in red, adding a unique and vibrant coloration. When planted in the garden, white garland-lily provides beautiful blooms, an exotic look and a pleasant scent.

watering

White garland-lily needs regular watering in order to remain healthy and robust. Generally speaking, the plant should be watered every 1-2 days throughout the growing season, providing 2-4 inches of water at each watering session. You can test the moisture level of the soil by sticking your finger in up to your first knuckle; if the soil feels wet then you don’t need to water it. During the winter, water the plant once a week; however, if there’s a prolonged dry spell you may need to water more frequently.

sunlight

White garland-lily is a tropical plant that needs full sun to grow well and flower. It should generally be grown in full sun during the summer months in the northern hemisphere, and should get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day. It can tolerate some afternoon shade if necessary, but should not be kept in full shade, as the plant will not flower and may not even survive.

pruning

White garland-lily can be pruned throughout the growing season, starting just after the blooms begin to fade. If the plant is growing too large or becoming leggy, trim the stems back to a leaf node or to about 1/3 of their original length. It is important to prune at the right time and not to wait too long, as this can reduce flowering or delay it until the following year. Deadheading of the spent flowers is also recommended. If pruning in the late summer or early autumn, avoid cutting off any flower buds. Pruning should be done in moderation in order to avoid over pruning, which can weaken the plant and reduce blooms.
