coral bells

Heuchera brizoides 'Chatterbox'

Coral bells (Heuchera Brizoides 'Chatterbox') is an attractive perennial plant with arching stems and bright green foliage. The frilly flowers bloom in shades of orange, pink, and red-violet and create an eye catching display. Chatterbox is deer resistant, disease tolerant, and an excellent choice for mass planting or naturalizing. It is a great choice for erosion control due to its dense clumping habit. The coral bells thrive in full to partial sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Pruning of the foliage in the spring and the deadheading of spent blooms encourages blooming and helps keep the foliage looking lush.

watering

Coral bells need consistently moist (but not water-logged) soil, so water when the top inch of soil is dry. It's a good idea to check it regularly, under watering can damage the plant while over watering can cause root rot. Water the plant thoroughly, until water begins to run off the bottom of the pot. Aim to water your coral bells no more than once a week, and water more frequently on especially hot and dry days.

sunlight

Coral bells (Heuchera brizoides 'Chatterbox') need 3-6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. They require more sun during the growing season in the spring and summer, but should have at least some shade during the intense heat of the day in hotter climates. In cooler climates, they may require up to 6 hours of direct sun. This means that they should be planted in an area that has direct access to the sun but not too much shade. This allows the plant to receive the right amount of sun for optimal growth.

pruning

Coral bells should be pruned during the late winter or early spring period. The goal of pruning coral bells is to remove any old flower spikes and dead foliage as well as encourage the plant to become bushier. Pruning should be done lightly, removing only approximately 1-third of the total foliage to maintain the overall shape of the plant. To ensure air circulation within the foliage and prevent fungal diseases, the top of the coral bells may be pruned more than the lower parts. Additionally, any branches that appear overly dense should be thinned out to allow air to reach the inner parts of the coral bells plant.
