stonecrop

Hylotelephium telephium subsp. ruprechtii

Stonecrop (Hylotelephium telephium subsp. ruprechtii) is a succulent perennial native to Asia and Europe. It has bright green, fleshy, many-branched stems with sparsely spaced, fat and juicy, clump-forming rosettes of leaves. Its yellow or pink-tinged star-like flowers bloom in late summer and early fall. It's perfect for rock gardens, path edging, and walls or fences. Its drought tolerance and ease of care makes it a great choice for residential xeriscaping and low maintenance garden beds. It is also rabbit and deer resistant and attracts butterflies. Stonecrop prefers full sun for its best flowering performance.

watering

Stonecrop should be watered regularly and lightly during the growing season, April to September. It should receive a deep watering once every 7 to 14 days. During dry periods, water more often to keep the soil moist; during wet spells, reduce watering frequency. If you're unsure about the water needs of your particular stonecrop plant, do the finger test: stick your finger in the soil to roughly knuckle-deep. If the soil feels dry, give the plant a good drink.

sunlight

Stonecrop (Hylotelephium telephium subsp. ruprechtii) does best in sunny locations with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It thrives best when placed in a south to southwest facing spot where it can receive full sun during the cooler hours of the day. Stonecrops do not tolerate shade and will not perform well in the shade or partial shade. Adequate sunlight is essential for flowering and for the plant to reach its full size. If grown in a shady spot, it will grow spindly with few flowers.

pruning

Stonecrop thrives in full to partial sun, and generally requires pruning twice a season. Prune in early spring prior to new growth starting. This will help stimulate new growth and help shape the plant to your preferences. In late summer or early fall, deadhead any faded flowers to encourage new growth for the next season. Avoid heavy pruning and, if needed, it’s best to prune back gradually over several seasons to avoid stressing the plant.
