watering

Orienpet lilies (Lilium 'American Way') should be watered deeply and thoroughly 1 to 2 times per week during the active growing season. This can be adjusted for times with more frequent rain and warmer temperatures, when it may be necessary to water more often. Check the soil surface for dryness before and after watering, and make sure that the soil has dried out before watering again. In periods of drought or extreme heat, 2 or 3 weekly waterings may be necessary. In the winter, when the plants are dormant, water infrequently and allow the soil to dry out between watering.

sunlight

The Orienpet lily (Lilium 'American Way') prefers full sun for optimal blooming. A minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight is ideal to promote the best flower production; however, if the plant is located in an area of intense heat, some shade may be beneficial. When planted in a spot that receives full sun in the morning and is shaded from the extreme afternoon heat, the lily will still be able to absorb the necessary ultraviolet rays for photosynthesis and flower formation. The best time for sunlight is from mid-morning to late afternoon, when the sun is at its strongest.

pruning

Oriental lilies (Lilium 'American Way') should be pruned in late summer, when the flowers have completed their blooming season. Prune the lilies by snipping off the dead flowers and their stems. Cut the flowers off at the base, close to the stem. If leaves are yellow or brown, they should also be cut off. Go along the length of the lilies and cut way any diseased, dead or otherwise unsightly growth. Take out a third of the height of the lily for best results. This will help the stem maintain a strong and healthy shape. Remember to disinfect your pruners in between use to avoid spreading plant diseases.
