Meehania cordata

Meehan's Mint (Meehania Cordata) is a herbaceous perennial that grows low to the ground in shady or sunlit areas. This mint features heart shaped, toothed, velvety leaves in a lush green color. It also produces small pink-purple flowers in clusters from late spring to early summer. This hardy plant is native to the U.S. Midwest and Northeast regions as well as China and Japan. Meehan's mint is an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, herb gardens, and edgings. It can tolerate partial sun and moist soil, and will be deer resistant. watering

Meehan's mint should be watered when the soil feels dry to the touch. During the active growing season, typically from spring to fall, water 1-2 times per week. Since the plant is moderately drought tolerant, there is no need to water during the winter months. To check if the plant needs water, stick your finger in the soil about 2 inches deep. If it feels dry you should water. It is best to water deeply rather than frequently to help establish healthy roots.

sunlight

Meehan's mint (Meehania cordata) thrives when grown in a sunny location that receives at least 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. This plant should not be kept in direct sunlight for too long though, as it is apt to scorch in extended periods of direct sunlight. To maintain optimum plant health, mornings are the best time to expose it to the sun, while the afternoon sun can be less intense and is ideal for encouraging flowering growth.

pruning

Meehan's mint (Meehania cordata) should be pruned once a year, after the plant’s main flowering period in late spring or early summer. Cut back branches that have finished flowering and shear or lightly trim the plant to maintain its shape. Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed. Pruning can help the plant remain healthy and develop strong, new shoots, encouraging further flowering. To ensure vigorous growth, thin out overcrowded stems and shoots. This light pruning will generally suffice, though if a more drastic renovation pruning is desired, this should be done just after flowering. Light pruning can also help the plant maintain a denser and more compact shape and prevent it from becoming woody and leggy.
