tweedia

Oxypetalum coeruleum

Tweedia (Oxypetalum coeruleum) is an annual plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It's unique member of the genus Oxypetalum, and can be found growing in tropical and subtropial areas of North, Central, and South America. The plant grows to a height of about one and a half to two feet, and produces small clusters of delicate white or pale blue flowers. Its light-green serrated foliage stands out against the flowers, making a beautiful display. It's a fast growing and fairly easy to care for plant that prefers full sun and well drained soil. It's drought tolerant and can be grown both indoors and outdoors, in addition to being a favorite of butterfly and bee gardens.

watering

Tweedia (Oxypetalum coeruleum) needs to be watered regularly, but only when the soil feels dry. It prefers approximately 1 inch of water per week, which can be provided by rain or manual watering. Avoid leaving the roots of this species waterlogged, as this could cause root rot. When it comes time to water, water thoroughly until moisture is seen in the potting soil. During drier and colder months, water less often and in moderation, allowing the soil to become dry between waterings. In the summer months, you may need to water your Tweedia plants every 1-2 days.

sunlight

Tweedia (Oxypetalum coeruleum) is a tropical perennial plant species that grows best in a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It also needs some shade from the intense midday sun to prevent sunburn on its delicate foliage. Tweedia does not do well in extremely dry soils, therefore it needs well-draining soil and should be watered regularly. This plant is happiest when it receives morning sun or filtered sunlight throughout the day. It can survive in partial shade but grows best in full sun.

pruning

Tweedia should be pruned in late spring or early summer, just before flower buds appear. The amount of pruning depends on the size and shape of the plant as well as how much maintenance time is available to you. Very large tweedia plants can be pruned back by up to 1-third of their size. Start by thinning out the center of the plant, which will help promote air circulation while also allowing the light to reach the lower levels of the plant. Prune off old, unusable stems at the base of the plant and remove any dead or diseased foliage. Trim any rapid-growing shoots that are causing the plant to become misshapen or disrupt the aesthetics of the space. Finally, lightly shape the outer edges of the plant to your desired look.
