round-leaved ragwort

Packera obovata

Round-Leaved Ragwort (Packera obovata) is a species of flowering plant native to the eastern United States. It is a perennial wildflower, reaching a height of 1–3 ft with flower stalks rising above the leaves. The leaves are round to spoon-shaped and are divided into 3–7 lobes. The bright yellow daisy-like flowers bloom in long-branched clusters from April to August, although in cooler regions flowering can extend into October. This wildflower tolerates a wide range of soil conditions and grows best in moist, well-drained soils in full to partial sun. Its blooms attract a variety of bees and butterflies, making it an ideal addition to a native or pollinator garden.

watering

Round-leaved Ragwort should be watered once a week to a depth of 1 to 2 inches, and it is best to water in the morning. Start by saturating the soil with water, then let it completely drain. Be sure the soil is never too wet or soggy; the roots and foliage should never be waterlogged. Once the top few inches of soil are dry, it's time to water the plant again. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

sunlight

Round-leaved ragwort (Packera obovata) does best when exposed to full sun. This plant thrives when it receives several hours of direct sunlight each day, ideally 5-7 hours during the late spring and early summer. Too much direct sunlight may be harmful to the plant, and if located in an area where it is likely to receive more than 7 hours of direct sunlight during the hottest months, the plant should be given some shade or filtered light for at least part of the day. During the colder months, when outdoor light may be limited, Round-leaved ragwort should receive at least 4 hours of sunlight each day.

pruning

Round-leaved Ragwort should be pruned in the spring before new growth begins. Pruning should take place when the plant is dormant, typically late winter or early spring. Prune back up to 1-third of the plant to keep the size manageable and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or damaged growth as well as any weak stems that don't produce flowers. After pruning, shape the plant by pinching back the remaining stems to create a more even appearance.
