Norway spruce

Picea abies 'Acrocona'

Also Known As - Norwegian Spruce
Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Acrocona') is an evergreen conifer that is among the fastest-growing spruces. It is resilient, hardy, and low-maintenance making it a desirable ornamental tree. Its foliage is bright green in spring and darkens to blue-green in summer. The branches are upright radiating out from the trunk and the branch tips tend to curve upward. In winter the activity increases with crowds of birds attracted to the hardy cone-like tips. An excellent windbreak or privacy screen, Acrocona reaches heights of 15-30 feet. With its attractive, vibrant foliage and ability to adapt to most soil conditions, it is a great addition to any landscape.

watering

The Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Acrocona') requires watering on a regular basis to help ensure healthy growth. During the growing season, water the planted tree deeply and evenly, allowing the top 2 inches of soil to dry out before the next watering for optimal growth. When established, the Norway spruce will require about 1 inch of water per week. In times of prolonged drought, more water may be necessary to keep the soil moist. Water the tree at soil level to help reduce water stress and the risk of foliage scorch. In the fall and winter months, no supplemental watering is necessary unless there is extended drought.

sunlight

Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Acrocona') requires full sun for optimum growth. This plant species prefers sunlight in the early morning dissipating around mid-day. During the growing season, which typically runs from May to mid-August, Norway Spruce needs around 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. During the winter when days are shorter and the sun is weaker, it is beneficial to keep this plant species in sunnier spots to ensure it gets as much sunlight as possible.

pruning

Norway spruce (Picea abies 'Acrocona') should be pruned in early spring before new growth emerges. Norway spruce requires minimal pruning, as most of the growth and form occurs naturally with little intervention. Pruning should mostly focus on removing dead, diseased and broken branches in order to maintain the optimal shape and health. Minor shaping and thinning can also be done to open up the center of the canopy and improve air circulation. It is important to avoid pruning more than 25% of the plant's foliage at any 1 time.
