Species Resurrection fern

Resurrection fern

Polypodium polypodioides

The Resurrection fern (Polypodium polypodioides) is a unique species of fern native to the southeastern United States. When exposed to dry conditions, the plant wilts in appearance, but when exposed to moisture, it rapidly resumes the green, healthy appearance of a living plant. This fern grows on rocks and tree trunks, relying on humidity in the environment to survive. The spore-forming structures of this species are preserved within the fronds and are protected from environmental stressors. The resilient nature of the Resurrection fern makes it an ideal companion plant for gardens and landscapes in warm climates.

watering

The Resurrection fern thrives in humid environments and needs to be watered regularly. It is considered drought-tolerant, so you can water it less frequently than other plants. Generally, water it once a week for about 15 minutes with a spray bottle, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During periods of extreme heat, the amount and frequency can increase to twice a week for around 20 minutes. Always water until the soil is damp but not soggy. If you water too much, the roots may rot.

sunlight

Resurrection ferns require bright, indirect sunlight for best growth. They can tolerate full sun, but extended direct light may cause the fronds to dry out and become brittle. It is recommended to place them in a window that faces east or west so they can receive morning or afternoon light, and avoid the intense direct sunlight in the middle of the day. Resurrection ferns can also tolerate partial shade, but will thrive in more sun. During colder months, the amount and timing of sunlight should be decreased. Winter sunlight should be 5 to 6 hours per day, mostly in the morning. During summer months, Resurrection ferns can tolerate up to 8 hours of daily sunlight.

pruning

Pruning for a Resurrection fern should take place in spring prior to any new growth. Pruning the plant should be done by removing dead fronds, as this will give new fronds enough space to grow. Leave at least 2-4 fronds on the plant to ensure the plant is able to survive as it requires some foliage to photosynthesize and to maintain growth. Pruning should be done with care, as Resurrection fern fronds are delicate.
