erect cinquefoil

Potentilla erecta

Erect cinquefoil (Potentilla erecta), also known as five-finger cinquefoil, is a herbaceous perennial native to the Northern Hemisphere. It is characterized by its upright stems and light green divided leaves that are arranged in clusters. It produces yellow flowers with five petals each in the early spring to late summer. It is common in grassy meadows, alpine pastures, and other disturbed habitats. The plant is easy to maintain and is generally undemanding of its soil type or conditions. After blooming, erect cinquefoil will create a beautiful carpet of green foliage and remain evergreen in many areas. It also makes a great addition to a low-maintenance garden as it does not require any special care.

watering

Erect cinquefoil needs consistent watering to ensure healthy growth. During the summer months, it’s best to water deeply once every 7-10 days. In the spring, and autumn, water every 10-14 days. During the winter, when the plant is dormant, keep the soil on the drier side and water only when the top of the soil is dry to the touch. Make sure to water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, as this can encourage disease. As a general rule of thumb, allow the top 4 inches of soil to dry out before watering.

sunlight

Erect cinquefoil (Potentilla erecta) appreciates full sunlight during the day and tolerates some partial shade. It prefers 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day in spring and summer, and 4-6 hours of direct sunlight in autumn and winter. This species of plant prefers cooler temperatures and is happiest when grown in full sun, partial shade or light no shade.

pruning

Erect cinquefoil (Potentilla erecta) is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant perennial plant. For best performance, it should be pruned regularly. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to remove damaged, diseased or dead branches, and to promote shapely growth. Pruning can also be done in early summer to encourage more compact shrub-like growth, and to promote flowering. Shear the plant lightly after flowers fade to maintain the shape. When pruning, be sure to remove only the necessary number of branches, as too much pruning can cause dieback. Finally, deadhead spent flowers to help promote new flowers.
