Pulmonaria officinalis 'White Wings'

Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis 'White Wings') is a low-growing, spreading perennial plant boasting clusters of white and blotched lavender flowers. Its lanceolate leaves are grey-green and splashed with creamy white. This plant prefers shade, moist soil, and good drainage. It can get to be about six inches tall, and 16 inches wide, making it suitable for edging beds, walkways, or growing underneath trees and shrubs. Lungwort is a great asset to the garden - it provides colour when there may not be much else around and is an excellent companion to other shade and bog loving plants.

watering

Lungwort needs to be watered about every 7 to 10 days in the summer, and every 10 to 14 days in the winter. Water the plant deeply, saturating the soil thoroughly but making sure there is not standing water. Allow the soil to drain after watering, and avoid keeping the soil too moist as this can lead to root rot. Water until there is an inch of water out the bottom of the pot - this should equate to about a quart of water for most pots. Avoid heavy, prolonged watering.

sunlight

Lungwort prefers partial or dappled shade and will tolerate full sun in cooler climates but may need some afternoon shade during intense heat. The ideal amount of sunlight for the species is around 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In very hot climates, it is best to provide some afternoon shade, especially during the summer when the sun is at its strongest. During the winter months when days are shorter and the sun is not as strong, the lungwort can tolerate more hours of direct sunlight.

pruning

Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis 'White Wings') should be pruned in early spring before any new growth begins. Cut back the previous year's stems to the base of the plant, removing any dead or damaged stems in the process. This will encourage regrowth of more lush, healthy stems in the spring. Rejuvenation pruning can also be done in late summer if the plant looks especially overgrown or untidy. In this case, remove up to 25% of the stems, again cutting them back to the base of the plant.
