lungwort

Pulmonaria 'Sissinghurst White'

Lungwort (Pulmonaria 'Sissinghurst White') is an evergreen perennial with striking white foliage and light lavender flowers. It thrives in partially shaded areas and can produce blooms from mid to late spring. With a clumping habit it can reach 30cm in height and is tolerant of both dry and humid conditions. Leaves are oval shaped and silvery-green, and its flowers are star-like clusters of white with a pale pink centre. Lungwort is used for ground cover in borders and rock gardens, and is attractive to bees. Its long flowering season and compact habit makes it an ideal choice for low maintenance gardens.

watering

Water Lungwort (Pulmonaria 'Sissinghurst White') every 7-10 days and water it deeply so that the soil is saturated, allowing water to penetrate the roots. Water more often during hot, dry weather. Avoid standing water and make sure the planting pot drains well. Do NOT let the plant dry out, as this could cause the leaves to turn yellow and wilt.

sunlight

Lungwort needs partial to full shade for optimal growth, with the best growth occurring in dappled shade. When the light levels are consistently high, more sunlight can be tolerated. However, if the plant is exposed to too much sun, the foliage can become yellow and the flowering can be reduced. When planting, try to find a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. For best flowering, aim for at least 4 hours of sunlight a day.

pruning

Lungwort can be pruned between late winter and early spring. Pruning lungwort involves removing dead foliage and flower stems to make way for new growth. Cut back any dead foliage to within 4-6 inches of the ground. During this pruning, also thin out the plant to make the stems more visible and promote air circulation. When pruning, be sure to use sterilized cutting tools to prevent the spread of disease. Deadheading any spent flowers is also recommended to improve the plant’s appearance. Once these initial steps have been completed, lightly prune the stems to the desired size and shape. Avoid pruning too heavily as this can lead to times of poor flowering.
