watering

Rhododendrons need plenty of water to thrive; however, it is important to avoid saturating or drowning the root system. Keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy is essential for the health of Rhododendron 'America'. Watering deeply once a week during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient. Make sure the soil is damp down to the root level, but do not give the plant an excessive amount of water. During the winter time, water every other week.

sunlight

Rhododendron 'America' should be grown in bright, indirect sunlight for the best blooms. This means it should receive several hours of direct sunlight throughout the day (ideally 4-5 hours), but not be exposed to intense, direct sunlight for extended periods of time. This species prefers partial shade or filtered light during the hottest parts of the day. Morning sunlight is best for this variety of Rhododendron.

pruning

Prune Rhododendron 'America' in late winter or early spring, just before actively growing season begins. Remove all dead, damaged, and weak branches to ensure healthy growth. Thin out overcrowded branches and cut back any branches that are too long. To maintain a good shape, prune branches to an outward-facing bud. Connected branches can be pruned back by 1-third their length and keep in mind that deadheading is not necessary for Rhododendrons.
