Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock'

Rodgersia pinnata, commonly known as Bronze Peacock, is a stunning herbaceous perennial plant native to East Asian mountain habitats. It is truly a sight to behold with bold and voluminous green-bronze foliage and magnificent wiry pink and white blossoms in summertime. Unfussy and quite shade tolerant, this plant is easily grown in most soils in a partly shaded position. The foliage will slowly subdivide into smaller rosettes, reaching about 2-3 feet in height and spread. Rodgersia pinnata is a great choice for adding texture and interest to wetland gardens, bog gardens, or small streamsides.

watering

Rodgersia (Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock') is an attractive low-maintenance perennial that prefers damp, humus-rich soil. Water deeply at least once per week, especially during periods of prolonged dry weather. Water evenly to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering as this may cause root and foliage rot. Do not allow the soil to dry out between watering. Fertilize in early spring using a balanced fertilizer and again in mid-summer. With proper care, Rodgersia (Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock') will reward you with attractive foliage and lovely flowers.

sunlight

Rodgersia (Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock') requires full sunlight to thrive. Ideally it should get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day during the spring and summer months when the days are longer. During the winter months when there is less daylight, it may not need full sunlight and can do just as well in partial shade. Rodgersia can tolerate more direct sunlight during the day if conditions are on the cooler side.

pruning

Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock' should be pruned back to the ground or to just a few inches above the ground in late winter, before the new growth starts. Cut all the foliage back as far as possible, removing any dead or weak growth and thinning out competing stems. As this plant blooms on new growth, it's OK to cut it back as much as desired. Afterwards, trim new shoots to keep plants a desired height and shape, if necessary. Pruning should be done annually to maintain the plants and encourage more blooms.
