Shrub roses should be watered deeply once a week during spring and summer. Make sure to soak the roots of the plant thoroughly in order to make sure the moisture penetrates deep into the soil. During summer, increase the frequency of watering to twice a week. Reduce watering during the fall season, as the plant doesn’t need as much water to survive. Stop watering all together in winter when the plant is dormant. Monitor the soil to determine if your shrub rose needs additional water. The top 1 to 2 inches of the soil should feel dry before it's time for another deep watering.

Shrub roses such as Rosa 'Radsun' Carefree Sunshine need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day to thrive. During the warmer months, when the days are longer, they can handle 8-10 hours of sunlight. The best placement for them is in a spot that gets morning sunshine, so they don’t get too hot in the afternoons.

Shrub rose (Rosa 'Radsun' CAREFREE SUNSHINE) should be pruned once a year in late winter or early spring, just before the start of new growth. Before pruning, make sure the shrub has been adequately watered and is not stressed from any damage caused by cold winter temperatures. To prune, begin by removing any broken, diseased, or dead canes and prune any shoots that have grown longer than the desired height. Cut back the remaining canes by about 1-third of their length, without removing cane buds too near to the base of the cane. If the bark is becoming thin near the ground, you can prepare a vertical cut about a ½” above the point you want to start renewal pruning. A renewal pruning should be done every 3-4 years. With regular pruning, shrub roses can be maintained in a compact and bushy shape and will stay within a given area. When pruning in late winter or early spring, add a layer of mulch or compost to the bottom of the shrub to help protect roots from the cold and provide helpful nutrients for the health of the plant.
