rockfoil

Saxifraga arendsii

Rockfoil (Saxifraga arendsii) is a low-growing perennial plant, usually less than 30 cm (12 inches) tall, native to the alpine regions of Central and Northern Europe, Siberia and Mongolia. Its fleshy, evergreen leaves form a rosette at the base and its lilac-pink flowers are borne in clusters during late spring and early summer. It prefers vigorous, sandy soils in part shade and is an excellent choice for rockeries, containers and for ground cover in between paving stones. Rockfoil is suitable for areas that are difficult to access, due to its small growth size and the wide range of soil types it can thrive in. It is a low-maintenance and drought-tolerant species, making it an ideal choice for beginners.

watering

Rockfoil should be watered once a week, applying enough water to wet the soil to a depth of 4–5 inches. As with all succulents, it is important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In the summer months, when the plant is actively growing, more frequent watering may be necessary. During the winter, the plant should be watered much less frequently, only when the soil feels dry.

sunlight

Rockfoil is an incredibly hardy plant species and can do well in either full sun or partial shade. Its ideal environment requires a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight each day, with indirect sunlight available throughout the day. The plant does best in areas that are consistently warm, and between the hours of 8-11am and 4-6pm the rockfoil should receive direct sunlight as sunlight during the height of the day is generally more intense. To keep the species flourishing, it is recommended that the rockfoil be given at least 8 hours of light on a daily basis.

pruning

The best time to prune Rockfoil (Saxifraga arendsii) varies, but it should generally be done in the spring or early summer. To promote dense growth, you can prune the plant back almost to the ground. Other than this harder pruning, the only other pruning needed is to remove dead or damaged stems. Rockfoil does not require heavy pruning and should only be cut back if the plant becomes too large or if you want to thin out the leaves for aesthetic reasons.
