Sedum 'Peace and Joy'

Stonecrop (Sedum ‘Peace and Joy’) is a low-maintenance, hardy little succulent with thick, curved leaves and clusters of star-shaped yellow flowers during the summer. It slowly forms a beautiful, dense, evergreen mat and handles full sun, frost, and drought with ease. The little leaves of this low-growing sedum are grayish-green and fade to pink when exposed to direct and intense sunlight, making it an especially beautiful addition to your garden. Stonecrop ‘Peace and Joy’ also works perfectly in rock gardens where its low, wide-spreading growth makes a great ground cover. This plant is a great way to add color, texture, and life into those often somber places in the landscape.

watering

Stonecrop plants should be watered when the top layer of soil begins to feel dry. Depending on the humidity level, temperature, and sunlight, you may need to water it twice per week, or once every few days. During hot summer months, be sure to check Stonecrop's soil for dryness more often and water generously whenever needed. About an inch of water should do. In winter, water less often, but still enough to keep the soil from becoming completely dry.

sunlight

Stonecrop (Sedum 'Peace and Joy') requires full sun for the best performance. In general, it prefers a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. If the plant does not get enough sunlight it may produce fewer flowers or become leggy with fewer branching habits. If it is shaded too much, the plant may become more susceptible to pests and disease. Ideal placement for stonecrop would be in a sunny location with light shade throughout the day. Placement in a south-facing spot offers the best opportunity to maximize the number of hours of sunlight the plant gets throughout the day.

pruning

To keep Sedum 'Peace and Joy' looking its best, prune it back to 2-3 inches above the soil level in late winter or early spring. This will encourage vigorous new growth and help keep the plant healthy and compact. You can also lightly trim the plant back after blooming to remove any dead or leggy stems. Prune off any wilting or dead flowers to encourage new blooms and remove any damaged stems. If the plant is overgrown, selectively cut away some of the stems toward the base of the plant to promote new growth and a more compact shape.
