licuri palm

Syagrus coronata

Licuri palm (Syagrus coronata) is a species of palm native to southeastern Brazil. It is an evergreen tree with an upright habit, growing up to 10–12 m tall. Its leaves are pinnate and have a bright green color. The fruit is globose and edible, containing a single large seed. It produces clusters of several yellow flowers which are pollinated by the wind. This species is often used in gardens and parks as an ornamental due to its attractive leaves and fruit. It is also used for timber in furniture, construction, and making paper. The species is drought-tolerant and can thrive in both humid and arid conditions.

watering

Licuri palm (Syagrus coronata) prefers to be watered approximately once per week. The amount of water should be sufficient to keep the soil slightly moist, but not overly soggy. During the hot summer months, the soil should be fully saturated with water and allowed to completely dry out between waterings. During the cooler months, the soil should still be kept slightly moist, but slightly drier than in the summer. It is best to water licuri palm early in the morning.

sunlight

The Licuri Palm (Syagrus coronata) needs plenty of sunshine in order to thrive. It should get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day to form strong, healthy stems and abundant leaves. In ideal growing conditions, this could include up to 12 hours of direct sunlight every day. However, if an area is particularly hot, its best to shade the Licuri Palm during the hottest parts of the day. If it is receiving inadequate sunlight, its growth and flowering will be stunted.

pruning

Licuri palm trees should be pruned twice a year—once in late winter and then again in late summer. Pruning should target dead or diseased limbs and leaves. If the Licuri palm is not pruned regularly, it may become overgrown and have an unbalanced shape. During pruning, remove any branches that are crossing or rubbing together and any that are growing straight up into the sky. Remove no more than a third of the canopy at 1 time. Also keep an eye out for dead flower stalks and remove them when they appear.
