Species Dahlberg daisy

Dahlberg daisy

Thymophylla tenuiloba

The Dahlberg Daisy (Thymophylla tenuiloba) is a deciduous, low-growing flowering plant. Its daisy-like flowers range from white to yellow, and have yellow centers. It requires full sun to reach its full potential, and does best in well-drained, dry soils. Dahlberg Daisies are drought tolerant and thrive in warm climates. They are a narrow, taprooted species with finely-divided leaves. This species blooms throughout the summer and will continue to bloom sporadically throughout fall. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens or containers. It makes a great groundcover, and will attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your garden.

watering

Dahlberg daisy should be watered thoroughly when the soil is slightly dry. It enjoys moist soil but avoid over-watering. In general, water them about once a week during the growing season when temperatures are high and the soil is dry at a depth of 1 inch. In the winter, water once every 2 weeks, provided there is no rain. Do not allow the soil to become soggy during the winter, or the plants will rot. During periods of extreme heat and/or drought, water Dahlberg daisy plants about every 3 days.

sunlight

The Dahlberg Daisy requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Sunlight should be provided throughout the day, but it is best to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day as the Dahlberg Daisy may be overwhelmed by the intense rays of the sun. Morning and afternoon sun are ideal for the Dahlberg Daisy. Too much bright sunlight may cause the foliage to become scorched and withered. Ideally, the Dahlberg Daisy should be receiving sun from the morning to the late afternoon, but should be shielded from the hottest sun of the day.

pruning

Pruning the Dahlberg Daisy is an important step in keeping it looking its best. This low-maintenance plant can be pruned once or twice a year. Prune it in late spring (May or June) and, if needed, again in late summer (August or September). Prune the plant before it starts to bloom for the best results. Start by lightly trimming the entire plant, taking off no more than 1-third of the total height. Remove any dead or dying stems and clean up the area around the base of the plant. Cut back the flowering stems to the ground for a more compact shape. This will encourage new growth and blooms next season. If you are careful with your pruning, you can enjoy these beautiful daisies in your garden for many years to come.
