watering
Handsome Pussytoes should be watered when the top inch or 2 of the soil is dry to the touch. This will usually be once a week but can be more or less frequent depending on climate and soil type. During hotter, dryer months or in climates with extremely heavy rainfall, water can be given more frequently. Poor drainage can contribute to root rot, so if standing water is visible on the top layer, it may be better to water less often. Avoid overwatering by only giving the plant enough water to moisten the soil, as this plant does not respond well to excess water.
sunlight
Handsome Pussytoes (Antennaria pulcherrima) are a perennial flowering plant that grows best in full sun. It requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, and does best in areas that get consistent and intense sunlight. For successful growth, this plant should be placed in an area that is exposed to direct sunlight for most of the day, preferably on southward facing slopes or in places that tend to stay free of large trees or tall buildings. Additionally, Handsome Pussytoes can tolerate partial shade but the flowers may not develop as full or as plentiful as when the plant is in direct sunlight.
pruning
Handsome Pussytoes should be pruned in late spring or early summer, just prior to flowering. Prune back only the flower stems to a few inches from the base of the plant and remove any dead or damaged stems. This will encourage new growth and vigorous flowering. Deadheading spent flowers can also be beneficial in maintaining plant vigor. Generally, no more than about 25% of the plant should be pruned back. Doing too much pruning can weaken the plant and reduce flowering.
