Garden Aubrieta

Aubrieta deltoidea

Garden Aubrieta (Aubrieta deltoidea) is an evergreen perennial, native to the seaside cliffs of the Mediterranean. This plant displays vibrant pink, white, and purple flowers during the spring, which last throughout the summer. Drought tolerant, Garden Aubrieta can thrive in almost any type of soil and requires minimal water and maintenance to grow. Perfect for adding bright waves of colour in a rockery or edging in a border, it is ideal for spots with poor drainage or exposed winds. Garden Aubrieta is also great for attracting pollinators and is deer resistant.

watering

Garden Aubrieta (Aubrieta deltoidea) is a fast-growing and low-maintenance plant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Watering requirements depend on the climate and time of year. In general, this plant should be watered deeply approximately once a week, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. During hot, dry spells, you may need to water more often. In the winter, when growth slows, water less often but do not allow the soil to become bone dry. Over-watering can be a problem for this species, so always check the soil before watering and do not water if the soil is already damp.

sunlight

Garden Aubrieta (Aubrieta deltoidea) requires full sun for optimum growth. It should ideally receive at least 6 hours of full sunlight daily. However, it can tolerate partial shade, but may not bloom as vigorously. If the plant is in partial shade, it should still have at least 4 hours of indirect sunlight a day. Garden Aubrieta plants should be put in a spot with sunshine in the morning to maximize its flowering potential.

pruning

Garden Aubrietas should be pruned in early spring once the risk of frost has passed. Pruning is only necessary if the plant has become leggy and overgrown. To maintain a tidy shape, trim them back to just above healthy buds or growth points. Be sure to keep the plant at a height of 6-10 inches (15-25 cm). If the Aubrieta has spread out too wide, you can also lightly trim the sides of the plant. A light pruning is recommended every 2 to 3 years.
