Species Krause's Sedge

Krause's Sedge

Carex krausei

Krause's Sedge (Carex krausei) is an evergreen sedge native to the rocky slopes of the southern Appalachian Mountains. It bears thin, grass-like green leaves and may grow up to 20 inches tall. Its foliage forms large clumps and its flower spikes bloom in May, containing delicate yellow-brown flowers. Ideal for gardens in areas with shallow soils and semi-shade, Krause's Sedge is tolerant of frost and prefers moist soils, provided that the soil is well-drained. From spring to autumn, the sedge provides a welcome lush green presence, in particular when mass planted with other sedges.

watering

Hybrid Sedge (Carex kelloggii var. kelloggii x) is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that does best in moist soil. However, it is important to provide adequate and consistent water in order to ensure healthy growth. Water the plant once or twice a week, depending on the temperature and the amount of rain or other water the area receives. The frequency of watering may be increased in dry, hot weather. In general, the soil should be kept moist but not wet. If water droplets remain on the surface of the soil, then it has been watered too much. If the soil appears dry, it needs more water. Water deeply, allowing the water to soak into the soil. Water slowly to ensure that all of the roots have the chance to receive moisture.

sunlight

Hybrid Sedge (Carex kelloggii var. kelloggii x) grows best in full sunlight, meaning 6 or more hours of direct sun per day. During the summer, when the sun is highest in the sky, the plant should receive all of the sun it needs to thrive. During the spring and fall the plant should get at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. In winter, it is best to give Hybrid Sedge at least 2 hours of direct sun per day. If your plant is in a sheltered spot and not receiving enough natural sunlight, you can supplement the sunlight with a grow-light.

pruning

Hybrid Sedge (Carex kelloggii var. kelloggii x) should be pruned in early spring before new growth begins. Pruning helps encourage more compact growth and delay flowering for a bushier look. Trim the dead or damaged foliage down to the base of the plant, removing any dead or diseased foliage. Prune undesirable or out-of-place stems down to the ground. Remove approximately 1-third of the stems to the base of the plant. Prune any stems that are spindly or crossing. This will encourage the plant to thicken up and produce more hybrid flowers.
