watering

Escallonia cordobensis plants should be watered frequently throughout the growing season, which typically begins in late spring and ends in early autumn. During this time, they should receive 1 to 2 inches of water each week, either from rain or from supplemental irrigation. To ensure sufficient moisture, plants should be watered thoroughly, drenching but not saturating the soil. Make sure the foliage is lightly damp, and the surface of the soil looks wet after watering. During the winter months when the plant is not actively growing, you should reduce watering drastically; it should only receive enough water to keep the soil slightly moist.

sunlight

Escallonia cordobensis grows best under full sun to partial shade. In general, the amount of sunlight needed should be between 4 and 6 hours a day. In areas with a hot summer, it is beneficial to reduce the amount of direct sunlight to 2 to 4 hours a day during the hottest part of the day to protect the foliage from sunburn or sunscald. This plant also tends to appreciate some morning sun and can tolerate light shade if there is too much direct sun in the environment.

pruning

Escallonia cordobensis should be pruned 3 times a year. The first pruning should happen in late winter (February or March), the second before midsummer (late June), and the third in late autumn (November). With each pruning, remove any dead wood and lightly trim the stems. Escallonia cordobensis can generally tolerate more aggressive pruning than other shrubs, so be sure to remove any lost of flowering any overcrowded branches as well, creating a more natural and even shape.
