watering
When watering, glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) plants should be watered deeply when the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of soil becomes dry. Watering once a week is usually sufficient, but check the soil moisture levels by digging into the soil near the base of the plant. Water for about 5 minutes so that the soil is thoroughly moistened. During hot, dry weather, more frequent watering may be necessary.
sunlight
Glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) typically prefers direct sunlight, or 6 to 8 hours of full sun exposure per day. This is when the sun is highest in the sky and can be particularly strong in USDA Zones 8 or 9. If plants are grown in a warmer climate, they may benefit from some afternoon shade. Throughout cooler zones, 4-5 hours of direct sunlight will usually suffice.
pruning
Glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) should be pruned twice a year, in the spring and summer. Pruning in the spring will encourage new branch growth and promote a compact, dense structure while keeping the shrub within its desired size range. Prune out 1/3 of the oldest branches and 1/3 of the longest branches, cutting back to a point just outside the node. During the summer months, lightly prune new growth to maintain the desired size and shape of the shrub. Because glossy privet can grow to a height of 15 feet, it is best to keep it between 10-12 feet.
