Magnolia 'Legacy'

Kobus Magnolia (Magnolia 'Legacy') is a unique flowering plant species native to the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri. Sporting beautiful large, glossy, evergreen leaves, this magnolia is also known as the bush magnolia. During their flowering season, sturdy, conical blossom buds open up and display clusters of fragrant, white flowers. Blooms are just under 8 inches in circumference and attract bees and other pollinators. The bush magnolia prefers full sun and is an ideal choice for a hedge or privacy screening. By late summer, golden red seed capsules appear, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

watering

Water your kobus magnolia (Magnolia 'Legacy') deeply once a week during the warmer months, and once a month during the cooler months. The amount of water will depend on the weather and soil. On warm, sunny days, be sure to monitor the soil for drying and provide extra water as needed. Sandy soils will dry out faster than heavier loam soils, and so will need more frequent watering. In general, provide about 1 to 2 inches of water each week. To ensure the roots of the plant are fully soaked, try to water slowly and deeply. Avoid frequent, shallow watering instead. During the cooler months, check the soil moisture of the plant every few weeks and provide a deep watering if necessary.

sunlight

Magnolia 'Legacy' (Kobus magnolia) should receive full sun or partial shade, depending on the climate and location. In warmer, sunnier climates full sun is preferable, while in cooler climates at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun is recommended. This variety of magnolia is best planted in an area that receives direct sun in the morning, and light afternoon shade. It will do well in full sun in cooler climates. The amount of sunlight should be adjusted according to the individual growing conditions.

pruning

Kobus Magnolia (Magnolia ‘Legacy’) should be pruned in late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant. Pruning should be done to maintain the shape and size of the tree and to encourage healthy growth. Remove dead, damaged or diseased branches as soon as you spot them. Thin out the center of the tree slightly to allow for light and air movement. Remove any crossing branches to reduce the chance of girdling and to keep the shape of the tree. Prune the branches that are growing too close to each other and reduce the height of the tree if needed. Also, prune the lower branches that are growing too close to the ground and take off any weak branches. Prune in small amounts to prevent over pruning.
