Wild bergamot prefers consistently moist soil, so it’s best to water it regularly but lightly. Water when the top inch or so of the soil is dry, and check the soil’s moisture level regularly (by sticking your finger in to the first knuckle). In summer heat, water regularly but in moderation (about 1”/week) and avoid drenching the plant, as standing water can cause root rot. In cooler seasons, water less often. Additionally, amending the soil with compost or mulch before planting can help with moisture retention.

Wild Bergamot (Monarda 'Petite Red Supreme') is best grown in sunny locations with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. The plant can tolerate partial shade, but it will flower best when given at least 6-8 hours of unfiltered, direct sunlight each day. This species typically requires no more than an hour or 2 of light in the afternoon. Morning light is preferred due to its long blooming season, with the more sun exposure it gets, the more flowers it will produce.

Wild Bergamot (Monarda 'Petite Red Supreme') should be lightly pruned in early spring to promote thick, bushy growth and healthy blooming. Start by removing any diseased, damaged, or dead branches or foliage. Cut back the entire plant to 1/3 of its original height to remove old blooms and promote new growth. In mid-summer, snip off any flower stalks that have passed their prime for continued blooming throughout the season. Finally, a light shearing of the plant is beneficial to help it maintain a tight form.
