Nageia nagi

Nageia nagi, or negeia, is an evergreen coniferous tree native to the temperate regions of Japan, Taiwan, and southern China. It has an upright, pyramidal form and grows up to 30 m in height. Its bark is reddish-brown to grey and its young shoots are covered in light brown hairs. Its needle-like, densely-clustered bright green leaves are stiff and scalelike, measuring 3-4 cm long. The male cones are yellow and the female are brown. The tree is often found on steep rocky slopes and in temperate climates, with acidic sandy soils. It has tolerance to air pollution, making it a nice species for urban landscapes.

watering

Nageia nagi should be watered regularly, about once a week, or when the top inch or so of the soil begins to dry out. Water deeply until it starts to seep out the bottom of the pot, then stop and allow the pot to fully drain. Keep the plant in a well-draining potting mix and don’t allow it to sit in water for long because this could cause root rot. During the summer months, it may need to be watered more often if exposed to direct sunlight and heat. In the winter months, it may need to be watered less often.

sunlight

Negeia (Nageia nagi) plants require moderate exposure to sunlight in order to thrive. They prefer indirect light, such as that found in shady locations or under partial cover. A few hours of direct sunlight each day, preferably in the mornings or late afternoon, is sufficient. During summer months, they might enjoy more sunlight than during winter months. Negeia can handle periods of full sun, but it should be limited to no more than 5-6 hours per day to prevent leaf burn and scorching of foliage.

pruning

Negeia plants should be pruned twice a year. In late spring (April to May), lightly prune away any dead or damaged branches that could interfere with growth or detract from the overall appearance of the plant. In late summer (July to August), lightly prune again to help encourage a more uniform growth habit and to control the size of the plant. Pruning should be done cautiously and seasonally to maintain the aesthetic appeal and health of the plant. Ensure you use very sharp garden shears and make the pruning cuts at the nodes, leaves or stems of the plant. Do not remove more than 1-third of the total mass of the plant during any pruning session.
