Serbian spruce

Picea omorika 'Nana'

Serbian spruce (Picea omorika 'Nana') is an attractive and graceful conifer with deep green needles and a compact, pyramidal growth habit. Its branch tips are held horizontally with slender, pendulous foliage, giving it a graceful beauty. It grows up to two metres in height and two metres in width, and is rather slow-growing. It is an excellent choice for smaller gardens as well as rock gardens or heaths. Strongly drought resistant and tolerant of heavy, wet soils, it is also tolerant of wind exposure. Serbian spruce requires full sun to part shade and is hardy in zones 4 to 7.

watering

Serbian spruce (Picea omorika 'Nana') should be watered 1-2 times per week during its first year. The goal is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. During warmer months, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Once the plant is established, watering every 5-7 days should be sufficient. During the summer months, watering may be increased to every 3-5 days to help the plant maintain its healthy growth. Always check the soil before watering and if it is still damp, wait a few days before watering again.

sunlight

Serbian spruce (Picea omorika 'Nana') plants prefer partial sun or dappled shade throughout the day. Although it can tolerate full sun for some hours, extended exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided in order to prevent the needles from becoming scorched and discolored. Serbian spruce can grow in many kinds of soils and need between 6 and 8 hours of sunlight per day for healthy growth and development. Morning sun is best in summertime, whereas in winter, afternoon sun is preferable.

pruning

Serbian spruce (Picea omorika 'Nana') needs to be lightly pruned once a year in late spring or early summer, just before the new growth begins. Pruning should be done by cutting away any dead or damaged branches and thinning out the crown to encourage light and air circulation. There may also be a need to remove branches that are growing too close together. Pruning should be done carefully and do not remove more than ⅓ of the tree’s branches at 1 time.
