The plant should be protected from noon sun and scorching summer sun when possible, as this can cause the leaves to burn.When the temperature is above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant should receive shade during the afternoon. In climates with strong sunlight, a layer of mulch around the plant can provide protection and help to conserve moisture.

Evergreen azalea (Rhododendron 'Chiara') can benefit from light pruning to keep its shape. The best time for pruning these plants is during the late winter or early spring before new growth starts. This should be done before the buds start to open. Pruning evergreen azalea plants should be done lightly. Trim back overly long stems to reduce height and shape the plant. The amount of pruning needed depends on the individual plant. Generally, no more than 1 third of the total height should be removed and over pruning is not recommended.
