Korean rhododendron

Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Deep Pink'

Korean rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Deep Pink') is a dense evergreen shrub that is native to South Korea and Japan. It blooms in late April or early May, producing small clusters of vibrant pink flowers. It grows best in slightly acidic soils and prefers partial shade and plenty of water. It grows to about 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide and can be an attractive addition to any landscape. It is an excellent choice for adding dramatic color and texture to a yard and can also be pruned for a more compact, bushy shape.

watering

For best results, the Korean rhododendron should be watered deeply once a week, especially during the summer months. Make sure to water the soil around the root zone so that it is completely saturated. Allow the water to drain from the pot before watering again. If the soil is still wet or soggy to the touch, it does not need to be watered as often. During the winter months, water once every 2 weeks, or even less often, depending on weather conditions.

sunlight

Korean rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Deep Pink') prefers full to partial sun with direct sunlight in the morning and filtered light in the afternoon. During the summer months, the plant should receive 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, and 2 to 4 hours of indirect sunlight in the afternoon. In the winter months, the sunlight needed is reduced to 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight and 1 to 3 hours of afternoon indirect sunlight.

pruning

Korean rhododendrons should be pruned in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Pruning should focus on removing dead, diseased, or damaged branches and shaping the shrub into an attractive form. Generally this plant should be pruned to remove up to 1-third of the oldest branches each year. Pruning should be done sparingly, as it can reduce the plant's flower production. New clippings should also be deadheaded.
